Pen Again in Hand
Reagan liked to write his own speeches, but as president he no longer had time. In the Oval Office, he sat with his new speech writers and told them what he liked and what he didn’t. “I prefer short sentences,” he said. “Don’t use a word with two syllables if a one-syllable word will do . . . if you can, use an example. An example is better than a sermon . . . use simple language. Remember, there are people out there sitting and listening, they’ve got to be able to absorb what I’m saying.”
Reagan – thanks to his time in Hollywood and with General Electric – was a masterful speechmaker. He had a formula, and he stuck to it: “. . . start with a joke or story to catch the audience’s attention, then I tell them what I am going to tell them, I tell them, and then I tell them what I have just told them.” He kept a collection of anecdotes and quotations that he shared with his speechwriters, and he continued to add to it.
